Canova. L'ideale classico tra scultura e pittura
Forlì, Musei San Domenico
From 25th January to 21st June 2009

The "Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì” has organised the "Canova. L'ideale classico tra scultura e pittura” exhibition. Curated by Antonio Paolucci, Fernando Mazzocca and Sergéj Androsov, and set up by Wilmotte and Alessandro Lucchina, the event will be housed at the Musei San Domenico as of the 25th January 2009. Forlì and the region of Romagna, which were fundamental for Canova and neoclassicism in painting and sculpture, shall be at the centre of the most compelling, comprehensive exhibition devoted to the Venetian maestro to date, after that of Venice in 1992. Visitors shall be able to admire 160 works produced by the artist, ranging from sculpture to painting, featuring a number of comparisons with Raffaello and Tiziano, and other masterpieces of that "classical” style which was a source of inspiration for many artists between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The greatness of Canova, celebrated as the greatest sculptor of all time whilst still living, for having recreated the perfection of Greek sculpture, shall be testified by exceptional loaned pieces such as the two colossal Pugilatori (Boxers) from the Museums of the Vatican, inspired by the two Dioscuri of the Quirinale, Palazzo Pitti's Venere Italica, the modern goddess so loved by Foscolo, and the Maddalena, a masterpiece for which Canova found inspiration in Tiziano.
The official video of the exhibition of Canova shall be visible during the exhibition. The television group coordinated by directors Lepri and Osser even filmed the courtyard of the Palazzo housing the Ethnologica gallery. What better way to end your visit!
